Prom Night originated in the United States around the turn of the 20th Century. The event typically was held at the end of the senior year, and became a major event in the lives of students finishing high school. A chance for the girls to showcase their favourite dress and for the boys to practise charming them.
In recent years, the “Prom” has moved over to the United Kingdom, partly influenced by the slow influx of American TV shows. The success of shows such as “My Sweet Sixteen” and “High School Musical” giving rise to the idea of a semi-formal or formal event celebrating the competition, popularity and achievements of High School seniors, finishing school and becoming adults.
Previously in The United Kingdom, many secondary schools held a Summer Ball or Leavers Ball to celebrate the end of schooling, but this did not have the cultural significance of the United States style “Prom”. Only in recent years in the United Kingdom has the “Prom” really taken off as an idea, and students taking part in this new cultural phenomenon keen to make it a night to remember with stretched limos and new outfits, to celebrate the end of their schooling.
For families hit by the recession, the cost of the event is less welcome, in 2013 parents were shelling out an average of £244 per child for the night for transport, clothing and accommodation.
