The word “marquee” derives from the French word “Marquise” which originally referred to various objects and fashions that were regarded as elegant or pleasing.
In more recent times the word marquee came to mean a large tent, usually used as a temporary building to house a specific event.
Marquees are particularly associated with English Summer gardens.
Marquees have been used throughout the centuries for everything from parties and circus fun through to housing armies in war time.
1920’s America saw some sensational marquee events. The glitz and modern artistic individuality dominated throughout this decade. Weekly parties were the norm, writers, artists and even athletes would attend glitzy parties often held in marquees.
The world’s largest marquee in history measured over 350 thousand square feet and was installed to house a car auction in the USA in January 2014.
Weddings are by far the most common use for a marquee.
